on the campaign front, it is all about ohio. voters have been getting plenty of face time with president obama and mitt romney. both campaigned hard in the buckeye state tuesday. in fact romney is spending four out of five days there this week. the reason? a new cnn orc international poll shows it is a close race for ohio's 18 electoral votes with 51% backing president obama, 47% for romney. made closer after last week's debate. meanwhile ohio's election chief has asked the supreme court to reinstate a new lieu that cuts off the final three days of early voting. an appeals court blocked the law pushed through by state republicans. as romney continues to campaign in ohio, president obama is back at the white house this morning.

and nbc's tracie potts joins us with all the latest from washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. the president dealing with romney closing the gap in a number of these battleground states, continues to say that the $5 trillion tax cut romney's proposing would add to the deficit and romney insists it is absolutely not true. >> he said if he says it's not true, then it's not true. okay. >> reporter: in battleground ohio, president obama insists mitt romney's tax cut will add $5 trillion to the deficit. >> if it's true that it's not going to add to the deficit, that leaves only one option and that's asking middle class families to foot bill. >> reporter: the president's charge of a $5 trillion tax cut is obviously inaccurate and wrong. >> reporter: romney also in ohio mocked the obama campaign's mocking his plan to cut funds for pbs. >> big bird. >> big bird. >> big bird. >> he's focused on saving big

bird. kind of a strange thing in my view because you see i'm focused on helping the american people get good jobs. >> reporter: sesame's street now asked the obama campaign to pull the big bird ad, yet there are weightier questions here as congress looks in to whether the u.s. was warned of the deadly libya attack. >> twice in the six month lead up, you had bombings at our compound there in benghazi and it's 9/11 in libya. what other warnings do you need? >> reporter: warnings of trouble now for president obama, romney's closing the gap. the latest polls, reuters has them tied. gallup has romney up by two. pew has him up by four. and we were talking about the polls in the balgtd ground states. it also now looks like according to other polls that pennsylvania and michigan may no longer be safe bets for the president. lynn. >> all right, thanks. last night on the rachel maddow show, nate silver talks about just how close the candidates are in the polls. >> the whole good month that obama had in september between the convention and the 47% tape,

morning on the 14-year-old pakistani girl shot in the head for blogging. the senior neurosurgeon tells nbc news the girl was operate order today but remains in critical condition. however, he is optimistic about her recovery. she was air lifted to a military hospital after being attacked while on a school bus in the swat valley. in washington, the state department joined in the outrage. >> directing violence at children is barbaric, cowardly and our hearts go out to her and the others who were wounded as well as their families. >> how to al qaeda and iraq. the terrorist group is reportedly rebuilding it strength in the after math of the u.s. troop withdrawal there last year. iraqi officials say that al qaeda has stepped up training camps in the western desert and has increased the number of attacks in iraq over the last few months. most of the militant fighters are thought to be former prisoners who were either

released by iraqi authorities or escaped from jail. here is your first look at some of the other news going on around america today. we'll begin with an incredibly scary attack in a pittsburgh alley. a popular teacher was punched right in the face as he passed a group of teens. police say they do not believe the 50-year-old was attacked by one of his students. no arrest has been made. next a bizarre incident inside a florida charter school. parents rushed into check on their children after a 13-year-old jabbed 20 students with a gluco meter. it caused wounds to the victims' arms and neck. a maryland tv crew captured a case of bullying right on camera. the teen was actually being interviewed about bullies when he was attacked and then chased off by three students that bullied him in the past. school officials are investigating. a massachusetts junkyard owner proved one man's trash is another man's treasure. listen to this, he found

to new jersey. they got like two or three days in a row. but much of the nation very dry. northern plains is chilly, but great all the way through the southeast today. you'll see a very enjoyable fall day. the worst of it is definitely found here in the northern great lakes. that's where we have the cold front slicing through. the rain has moved through michigan overnight and now settling over toledo and detroit. chilly behind it. mild ahead of it. you can see the rain in detroit, give it another two hours of light rain and then it will be done. toledo, light rain going through now and then you should clear out in about an hour or so. new england will also see some of the showers from that cold front later today, but the big story is the cold temperatures, windchills in the 20s all through the northern plains and even chicago right now has a windchill of 32 degrees. a cold morning at the bus stop for sure for many, many kids. and as far as this afternoon go, we will warm it up. just a few showers. one more murky day for new england and areas around new york city. and tomorrow, i think you'll like it a lot better. >> i'll take that. thanks so much.

day. the dow closed at 13473 after dropping 110 points yesterday. the s&p fell 14, the nasdaq sank 47. taking a look overseas, in tokyo, the nikkei plunged 173 points while in hong kong, the hang seng lost 17. so how will investors react to the unofficial start to earnings season? after the bell, alcoa lowered its 2012 outlook for aluminum demand but reported slightly better than expected earnings and revenue. also yum brands said it saw strong quarterly sales in china. the international monetary fund says global financial risks have risen in the past six months. that's thanks mostly to the eurozone debt crisis. on tuesday, protests got heated in greece as german chancellor angela merkel pledged her support for strict austerity measures there. this morning toyota is recalling nearly 7.a 5 million

good morning. in sports, san francisco and oakland win to force a game four in both series. we're going to begin in cincinnati though. with two outs and two on in the top of the tenth, the giants joaquin arias hits a grounder to third, but reds infielder scott rolen bobbles the ball giving arias enough time to beat the throw to first as the go-ahead run scores for a 2-1 giants victory. to oakland now where the athletics player hit and rbi single in the first inning and seth smith belted a home run to right center in the bottom of the fifth giving oakland a 2-1 victory over the tigers. aside from the two big hits the a's relied on their pitching and defense. back in the top of the second, oakland outfield coco crisp makes a leaping grab to rob a would-be home run by prince fielder. well, to football now, nfl commissioner roger goodell reduced the bounty related suspensions of two new orleans saints players. linebacker scott fujita's three game suspension has been reduced to one. and defensive end anthony
